  • Re: hand cards

Hand carders are like spinning wheels, everyone has their favorite. I have curved back Clems $ Clems that I started out with over 25 years ago. They are standard 72 teeth per inch. I can do just about anything with them, blend fiber, make rolog, make sliver (semi-worsted). I can't do cotton. For...

  • Hand cards

What hand cards are the best value? What should I buy for my first pair? What ones do you like? How many teeth do I need? I will probably be carding dog , at least in the beginning but will probably branch out to wool and alpaca and anything else you can imagine!!

  • Re: Wool Washing

For me this is a long summertime activity. Earlier this week it was -20 deg F or around -30 deg C, Brrrrr. I went to the Dollar Store and bought wire mesh baskets. You could also go to OfficeMax (or the like) and get stackable bins. I also bought buckets to stack my baskets about 2-3 high. Be sure to...

  • Re: Wool Washing

I've heard of some people using their crock pots to clean fleece; the same pots they prepare food in. ewww! Pardon the pun. PLEASE use separate crock pots. Considering the dung, urine, chemicals (sheep dip kills parasites), and soil that is in the fleece, I don't want them in my crockery. There...

Hi Dawn Wow, I just stick mine into hot soapy water in the laundry tub, or bath, depending on how much I want to wash and let it sit until cold, then rinse or rewash as necessary, then it gets thrown into spin the excess water out. And outside on a sheet to dry. It never felts. Only going from hot to...

  • Fermented Suint Method washing wool

I'm a bit backlogged on fleeces so I'm going to try something different: fermented suint method of washing wool. Since I couldn't find my Fall '08 Spin Off, I Googled. This is a simple, yet stinky method of cleaning wool with less water . Natural yeasts eat all the offending things and...

  • How do you prepare anogora goat fleece?

Someone gave me 2 angora goat (mohair) fleeces. How are they prepared for spinning? Do you wash them before spinning like wool or after like llama? I want to blend them with Llama. One has a very strong odor and the other one has what appears to be flakes of skin in it.

  • Re: Looking for a source...

That would be absolutely wonderful. :) You, and they, totally rock... with a side order of awesomesauce. Your translations of the articles has me wondering if I can also perhaps get a sample of the Old Norwegian. I wasn't sure that they were two different breeds or not. If they are, I think the Old...

  • Re: I remember when...

Let's see, I started spinning in 86 while in college. I found Spin-Off rather quickly luckily. By that time roving was starting to appear, but mostly you bought fleeces still.
