Wisconsin is known as America’s Dairyland, but spinners far and wide know this Midwestern state for its many fiber festivals, camps, knit-ins, and spinning retreats. Here are a few you can look forward to in 2019 and 2020.
Interlacements Yarns owner Tracey Schuh holds an All Fiber Arts Retreat in Door County, a region known for art galleries, wineries, and stunning fall colors. The 2018 retreat included classes on spinning, fiber blending, Tunisian crochet, knitting, and weaving on a rigid-heddle loom (affiliate link). In 2019, attendees can once again participate in yoga classes or sign up for a Reiki session. This retreat allows you to try several new crafts or simply relax by the lake and spin.
Located just off the tip of Door County on Washington Island, Sievers School of Fiber Arts offers classes for all types of fiber-related crafts, including spinning. In 2019, Wisconsin’s own Deb Jones will be teaching her Spinner’s Wool Breed Study course. Participants will learn about fine-, medium-, and longwool breeds as well as double-coated sheep in an immersive class designed just for fiber artists. The school’s shop complements the classes with a selection of tools and supplies to tempt all fiber lovers. Visiting from afar? The school has plenty of spinning wheels (affiliate link) and equipment to use during your stay.
Just up the Yahara River from Madison, the Wisconsin state capital, Susan McFarland hosts the annual Susan’s Fiber Shop Spinning Retreat in DeForest. Grab your wheel, pack your spinning tools, and spend the weekend with one of the handspinning community’s treasured teachers. The 2019 event featured spinning teacher and regular Spin Off contributor Jillian Moreno; stay tuned for more information on who will be teaching at the 2020 retreat.
