A charkha is used for spinning short-staple fibers, such as cotton. Spin Off contributor Marilyn Rishel Sult got the itch to build her own after helping her friend repair hers. With limited woodworking skills, Marilyn devised plans for building a charkha using a wooden cigar box.

Here, Marilyn includes the materials and tools needed to build your own cigar-box charkha, plus complete written instructions and schematics for both a one-box and two-box charkha.

General list of materials needed:

  • Cigar box
  • Steel rod
  • Copper tubing
  • Drawer pull
  • Scrap wood
  • Waterbased sealer
  • Buttons with shank
  • Small hinges
  • Tiny springs or rubberbands
  • Eye hooks
