The formula for spinning yarn is simple: fiber + twist = yarn. One key component of this magical equation—twist—is the theme for Spin Off Summer 2021. Finding twist’s sweet spot for a chosen fiber and project can make many spinners feel like Goldilocks; we want it to have just the right amount. However, what is the “right” amount of twist? Does handspun have to be balanced? These questions have long been hot topics of debate for good reason; twist is not as simple as it seems.
Help us explore the art and science of twist. Do you have tips for spinning yarn to match a fiber’s crimp? Did you try spinning to crimp and found it didn’t work for you? How does fiber type impact energized singles?
Tell us how sampling helps you find the perfect balance. Love high-twist handspun? Show us your work! How does twist affect the end use of the yarn? What projects show off twist’s power to spectacular effect?
Do you have a new angle on twist? Share your article and project proposals with Spin Off.
Submissions due: August 17, 2020.
We are looking for:
- Feature articles—stories, profiles, history.
- Handspun projects—instructions using knitting, weaving, crochet, or other techniques with handspun yarn.
- How-to articles—tell us how it is done.
Have an idea that doesn’t fit our theme? Send that to us, too! We may be able to use it in an upcoming issue.
Also, we are always looking for content for our website. If you have an idea for a short piece, about 300 to 500 words, please submit your proposal to us.
