As 2025 begins, many of us are considering what we want to learn as spinners this year. Will this be the year to make a project from start to finish on a spindle, finally comb a whole fleece, or push ourselves to improve short-forward draw? Whatever it is, twist is the glue that holds yarn together, and that’s the theme for this year’s spin-along.
We've been hearing from some of the enthusiastic spinners who join our annual spin-along each year, and the Equinox Cowl by Sivia Harding published in Spin Off Winter 2025 seemed to be top of the list for this year's theme. This fun Moebius-style cowl is easily adaptable to a variety of yarns and gauges, making it a perfect choice (learn more below)! Since we like to make sure our themes include a wide range of skill-levels, learning styles, and crafters, we settled on "With a Twist" for the theme. Spinners who are knitters, weavers, crocheters, embroiderers, and more are all welcome to interpret the theme as they choose!
Twist-Along 2025
From unexpected yarn structures to cables to adding even more twist with energetic yarns or twined knitting, there are plenty of options for this year’s spin-along. Here are a few ideas to get you started:
Try Adding Texture with an Intermittent Third Ply
Does art yarn feel daunting to you? Why not try adding texture with an intermittent third ply? It looks fancy, but with Amy Tyler’s excellent tutorial in the Spin Off Winter 2025 issue, you’ll be surprised to discover how easy and fun it really is!

Experiment with Twist in Your Yarn
As spinners, we often seek the ideal of a balanced skein, but why not explore the possibilities of adding extra twist for high-energy yarns? Explore the wonders of working with energetic yarns with Amy Tyler’s Energized Cinder Blocks Cowl or weave a Romney Pleated Scarf from Spin Off Summer 2021.
Looking for something a little more relaxing? How about adding less twist than you think you need? Add less twist to your singles to keep them as singles or add less twist at the plying stage to make the perfect lace yarn for an Orenburg lace scarf.

Let Your Project Do the Twist
Once you’ve spun your yarn, add yet another twist with Sivia Harding’s Equinox Cowl. This cowl uses the Moebius Cast-On invented by Cat Bordhi and has been on our editors’ must-knit list ever since we first saw it!
