LoginFinding the perfect pattern for handspun sock yarns can be a challenge. This isn’t so much a pattern as it is a recipe for making classic handknitted socks in any size using whatever yarn you please. It relies on the basic geometry that underlies the shaping of a sock. Using your gauge and your foot measurements, you’ll derive your Key Number. That number will be used to determine the remaining numbers in your custom sock pattern. From there, you can add stripes, contrasting heels and toes, cables, colorwork, and anything you like!
Unlike most patterns, there is no specific finished size, gauge, yarn, or recommended needle size. You’ll determine the size of your socks based on the measurements of the intended wearer’s foot. You’ll determine your gauge based on a swatch made with the handspun yarn and needles of your choice.
Use this recipe to help you make the most of your handspun with socks that fit, no matter your gauge.
Sandi Rosner (she/her) learned to knit in the late 1970s from the instructions in the back of a magazine and adopted her first spinning wheel in 2010.
