As spinners, we’re endlessly curious, always seeking to learn more about the fibers we love. Each fiber seems to have its own personality, and brings its own strengths, quirks, and qualities to the wheel, e-spinner, or spindle. This winter, we invite you to explore the qualities that make each natural fiber shine, whether alone or in a blend.
How do you begin a breed study, and how do you put your knowledge into practice once you’ve sampled a dozen (or more!) types of wool? What are the plusses and minuses of different natural fibers? What makes Targhee a great choice for one project, but not the best for another? What about that no-name fiber you picked up at a fiber festival—how can you identify its best qualities and spin it into something truly stunning?
Silk is always a favorite for a bit of softness and shine, but there’s more than just one kind of silk, each with its own unique qualities. From cocoons to hankies, recycled sari silk to bombyx, how do you choose the best pairing for your project? How much silk do you need to affect shine, drape, or another quality you’re seeking in your finished object? Share your best tips for spinning these luxurious fibers.

What’s the best beginner fiber? Do you have a no-fail all-natural fiber blend for socks? Surprise us with your answer!
Do you need the softest wool for lace? Can you use a stronger fiber? What about bast? Have you created a lacy shawl pattern that perfectly showcases your fiber of choice?
How do you showcase your samples from a breed study? Send us your ideas for a weaving pattern that makes use of many different types of fibers!
Are you exploring new methods for spinning naturally-colored cotton for a soothing cross-stitch project? What tips can you share with our readers for handspun sewing thread that won’t shred or snap while they stitch?
Share your article and project proposals for the Winter 2027 issue of Spin Off. We can’t wait to hear your ideas!
