This is my first post to Spinner's Connection, but I have been helping Peg Coffey read through your newsletters for a while now. I am amazed at the inventive ways guilds around the world challenge themselves and make fiber arts more visible. A theme that is also constantly at work in your newsletters is charity.
After the 2011 New Zealand oil spill, volunteers, including members of the Pinellas Weavers Guild (Florida), knitted sweaters to warm injured penguins. You can visit www.Skeinz.com to see many penguin jumper creations. The Pinellas guild members were also busy making caps for the Red Cross Web of Hope. The box of caps made its way to the Rosebud Indian Reservation in South Dakota to help warm and cheer impoverished children.
The Felting Study Group members of the Potomac Fiber Arts Guild (Washington, D.C.) developed a creative use for their imperfect felted objects: warm, woolen insoles for the homeless. The nine members broke into teams, cutting soles and creating additional felted fabrics. The new felt pieces were needlefelted using a FeltLoom and were later fulled by hand. Their efforts, dubbed "Saga of the Soles," resulted in the creation of over eighty pairs of insoles, which were donated to The Homeless Center in Rockville, Maryland.
